Although it is not a holy holiday, Halloween is by far one of the most popular holidays for kids and adults alike to dress up in costume.

Kids love to dress up and experiment with things that frighten them. For adults, it is fun to participate in decorating and creating costumes with the kids as well as handing out candy to the “trick-or-treaters” that come by on Halloween night.

Halloween has grown in popularity with the “adults-only” set as well. No longer must you have children to dress up in order to get into the swing of Halloween. Costume parties get more and more popular every year. Whether just for fun or to win the ultimate prize, dressing up in costume for Halloween is great for all ages!

When it comes to holidays, Halloween is a favorite ranking second only to Christmas in an online survey taken a few years ago. And, it seems like it’s popularity is growing all the time!

A Disney website polled its users on Halloween popularity and preferences, finding that many people begin planning for the spook-fest months in advance and that many prefer homemade costumes.

Specific results of the poll taken include:

  • Most Popular — 55% of respondents ranked Halloween as one of their top two favorite holidays. Christmas was first with 94%. Thanksgiving came in a distant third at 18%.
  • Halloween Planning — A majority of families (55%) begin planning a month before the fright night. Surprisingly, 12% of early bird planners begin planning their spooky costumes and decorations from two months to an entire year before Halloween.
  • Homemade vs. Store Bought — 57% of respondents preferred homemade Halloween costumes vs. store bought costumes.
  • Type of Costume — It’s a toss up. 35% of respondents prefer unique, one-of-a-kind costume creations while a close second (33%) prefer trendy, character-inspired costumes and 24% preferred timeless Halloween costumes like a ghost, black cat or witch.
  • Decorating — Most people will decorate for Halloween in some way, ranging from a few frights (46%) to transforming their house into a scary haunted mansion (10%).
  • Dressing up in costume is such a fun activity because it allows you to express yourself and be something that you normally wouldn’t for that one special day. And if you do take the kids out “trick-or-treating” then you come home with all kinds of yummy candy and treats to fill your belly!
